Why Guinea Hogs? When we first started our small farm we wanted to have pork, but only knew about the large commercial pigs which grow huge in a short time. We were told to get two to keep each other company. They were very smart and at times could be very sweet, but they were just to big. We had more pork then we could handle and didn't have a market to sell it to at that point. We decided that we would never do that again....
Then I joined ALBC and learned about all the rare and heritage breeds out there. Stephen was interested in hogs again, but they had to be manageable and be able to feed themselves to some degree. Then there was the discussion on size, what do we need to feed ourselves? Not as much as we had with the two feeder pigs. Also starting a farm off slowly allows us to see what works to feed us and then start thinking about marketing to feed others.
Guinea Hogs were what we were looking for...now just to find them....
Thank goodness for Sullbar Farm.
